Szilvia Takács

I am Szilvia Takács, a counseling psychologist, family therapist, EMDR practitioner and relaxation therapist.

After my liberal arts studies, I started studying psychology out of my interest in natural sciences. At that time, my focus was on the body-mind connection, and human learning and memory processes. I earned my psychology degree at ELTE, and then at BME’s cognitive psychology master’s program. In addition to my studies, I did volunteer work with groups of children with autism spectrum disorder and in adventure therapy programs. After that, I worked for three years at the CEU Cognitive Developmental Center, the Babylab.

My interest gradually turned towards the helping profession, so I enrolled in the postgraduate training of counseling psychology at ELTE, where I obtained a qualification in crisis intervention, and then I started working at the University’s Counseling Centre. During the years I spent here, I typically provided psychological counseling to students and held autogenic training groups for University employees. A valuable part of my work was also the supervision of the professional practice of psychology students in training.

I have been working in private practice since 2016. The main pillars of my work as a psychologist are determined by the approach and tools of the therapeutic methods I have learned.

My professional thinking is primarily characterized by a holistic approach and trauma awareness. Since 2018, the main tool in my work has been EMDR therapy, during which we try to map and heal the acute and deep-seated, chronic traumas behind my clients’ current blockages. The structure, humane approach and effectiveness of the method fills me with admiration every day.

As a family therapist, I currently typically work with couples, but the systemic approach of the method is also important to me in my individual case management, since no difficulty can be separated from the closer family and wider social environment, between which it developed and in which it can be resolved.

In addition to the past focus of the trauma-aware approach, I consider it important that my clients can mobilize their own external and internal resources in the therapeutic process, and that they acquire as many tools as possible in the field of effective stress management and self-care. As a relaxation therapist, I can also introduce those who come to me to the stress-reducing method of autogenic training, but as a qualified yoga instructor, I also enjoy using other techniques that focus on body sensations and breath.

Maintaining professional contact with my mentors and colleagues and regularly participating in further training are important to me. I also place great emphasis on continuously deepening my own self-knowledge, so that my clients experience working with me as being in a safe space. My goal is to support them on their therapeutic journey in a personalized, trusting atmosphere, during which they can get closer to their balanced, true selves.
